How It's Calculated

Formula

\text{fat calories} = \dfrac{\text{calories} \times \text{fat\%}}{100}
\text{fat grams} = \dfrac{\text{fat calories}}{9}

This calculator converts a daily calorie target and a chosen fat percentage into a daily dietary fat allowance, in both calories and grams. Fat provides 9 kilocalories per gram (the standard Atwater general energy factor used throughout nutrition science), so dividing your fat calories by 9 gives the gram figure. Unlike a full macro-split calculator, this tool only asks about fat — it does not require your fat percentage to reconcile with any carbohydrate or protein split. This is an estimate for general informational and educational purposes, based on a published formula — it is not a medical diagnosis, and it is not a substitute for individualized advice from a qualified healthcare provider. This is a general energy-distribution calculation, not an individualized cardiovascular-treatment plan — it does not account for fat type (saturated vs. unsaturated), cholesterol, or any diagnosed cardiovascular condition. If you have a heart-health condition, follow the fat target your healthcare provider gives you rather than a generic percentage.

Worked Examples

2,000 kcal at 30% fat

  1. Fat calories: 2000 × 30 / 100 = 600 kcal
  2. Fat grams: 600 / 9 ≈ 66.67 g

Frequently Asked Questions

Why doesn't this calculator offer preset heart-health percentages?

There's no single, universally-verified fat-percentage figure for goals like 'heart-health' or 'low-fat' — the right number depends on individual health context. Rather than invent an unverified preset, this calculator lets you enter the exact percentage your healthcare provider or a trusted nutrition source recommends.

Does my fat percentage need to add up to 100% with other macros?

No. This calculator only computes a fat allowance from the percentage you enter — it does not require that percentage to combine with a carbohydrate or protein split. If you want a full macro breakdown, use the Macro Calculator instead.

Why is fat's kcal-per-gram different from carbs and protein?

Fat provides about 9 kilocalories per gram, denser than carbohydrate or protein's roughly 4 kilocalories per gram. This is the standard Atwater general energy factor used throughout nutrition science and food labeling.

How do I pick my daily calorie target?

This calculator does not derive a calorie target for you — it splits whatever target you enter. If you want a number based on your maintenance calories or a weight-loss/gain goal, use the Calorie Calculator first, then enter its result here.
