How It's Calculated

Formula

\text{carb g} = \dfrac{\text{calories} \times \text{carb\%}}{100 \times 4}

This calculator converts a share of your daily calorie allowance into carbohydrate grams and calories. Carbohydrate provides 4 kilocalories per gram (the standard Atwater general energy factor used throughout nutrition science, the same constant the Macro Calculator uses). The calculator multiplies your daily calorie allowance by your chosen carbohydrate percentage to get carbohydrate calories, then divides by 4 to get grams. Unlike the Macro Calculator's three-way split, this tool converts carbohydrate alone and does not require a paired protein/fat percentage to sum to 100%. This is an estimate for general informational and educational purposes, based on a published formula — it is not a medical diagnosis, and it is not a substitute for individualized advice from a qualified healthcare provider. This is a general nutrition estimate, not an individualized prescription — it does not account for activity level, training goals, or medical conditions.

Worked Examples

2,000 kcal daily allowance, 50% carbohydrate

  1. Carbohydrate calories: 2000 × 50 / 100 = 1000 kcal
  2. Carbohydrate grams: 1000 ÷ 4 = 250 g

1,800 kcal daily allowance, 33.3% carbohydrate

  1. Carbohydrate calories: 1800 × 33.3 / 100 = 599.4 kcal
  2. Carbohydrate grams: 599.4 ÷ 4 = 149.85 g

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is carbohydrate 4 kcal per gram?

This is the standard Atwater general energy factor used throughout nutrition science and food labeling for carbohydrate — the same constant used by protein (also 4 kcal/g), while fat is denser at about 9 kcal/g.

Do I need to also enter protein and fat percentages?

No. This calculator converts carbohydrate alone from your calorie allowance and carbohydrate percentage. If you want a full protein/carbohydrate/fat split that must total 100%, use the Macro Calculator instead.

How do I pick my carbohydrate percentage?

This calculator does not recommend a percentage for you — it converts whatever percentage you enter. Typical dietary patterns vary widely, so consult a nutrition professional for an individualized target.

Can I set the carbohydrate percentage to 0% or 100%?

Yes. Both boundary values are valid: 0% means no calories are allocated to carbohydrate, and 100% means your entire daily calorie allowance is converted to carbohydrate grams.
